Contact Us

The best way to find out about the club is to visit us and meet some members.

The club is open on Sundays during terms 4 and 1 from 8.30am until about 4pm.

Our club is run by volunteers, so if your query cannot answered by the frequently asked questions (FAQs) and you’ve had a good look through the website, then send us a message and we will get back to you, hopefully within a couple of days.

Season Opener - Sunday 18th October

Jules Hall

When you receive this email it will be 10 days until the first day of our 2020/21 sailing season! Bring it on!

Sunday 18th October marks our first club championship race for all classes. We also start our Sunday morning sailing school.

The Flying 11’s and Cherubs have been out practicing and checking their boats. Sabot sailors - make sure you do the same. Nothing worse than a breakage in the first races of the season and having to swallow an early discard!

With the addition of Adventure Sailing to the sailing school program we’ve been revisiting the Sunday morning order of events. This will be updated on the website early next week and circulated in next week’s newsletter. All races will continue to start at the normal times (11am Sabots, 2pm Flying 11’s & Cherubs).

We’re looking forward to seeing you all down at the club for an excellent season of sailing and fun!

Term 4 - Sunday Sailing School

Jules Hall

If you’re kids are keen to participate in this terms Sunday morning sailing school program, please sign them up asap. As an Australian Sailing Discover Sailing Centre we not only offer accredited courses, but we have to ensure we have the right number of qualified instructors lined up to coach the children. The sooner you book your kids in, the better the coaches we can secure to teach them!

Any questions on the sailing school, please email Jules Hall on sailingschool@va12sc.org.au

Adventure Sailing - Term 4

Jules Hall

A reminder that we are introducing a new sailing school option for kids this term - Adventure Sailing.

The idea of this program is to create an alternative pathway for kids who’ve completed Start Sailing 1 & 2 (or equivalent) and who don’t want to start racing. There are plenty of kids who enjoy coming down to the club, messing about in boats and sailing in a more relaxed manner than jostling on the start line competing for the win. This program is designed to ensure we keep these kids, and their families, associated with the club, helping them to continue to build their nautical skills but with a firm focus on the fun factor! And who knows, those same kids may decide in a year or two that they are ready to have a go at racing once they’ve built their skills and confidence.

You can sign your kids up for Adventure Sailing here. If you have any questions about this program, or other sailing school courses, please email Jules Hall on sailingschool@VA12SC.org.au

Sabot Race Training - October Holidays

Jules Hall

We have the opportunity to run a specialist Sabot race training course coached by Miles Davey, Australian national champion & Australian team representative in the 29-er. You can read Miles’ Australian team bio here and see him being interviewed with his sailing partner Henry Larkings here

To make this course happen we need 6 sailors to register. If you are interested please email Sally Badger who is coordinating: sarahbadger@gmail.com

October Holiday Camps - book now!

Jules Hall

We’ve had a lot of interest in our October holiday camps. If you’re thinking about signing up your kids we recommend you do it ASAP to avoid missing out.

A tip from previous camps (especially if this is your kids first sailing camp) - try to get one or two of their friends to sign up with them. The moral support they get from each other goes a long way and always results in more fun!

Book here.

Slipway & Winch Maintenance

Jules Hall

This Sunday afternoon (12th September) the slipway winch will be decommissioned for annual maintenance. The slipway will be out of action for the following week, aiming to be operational the following weekend.

Lock in your complimentary clubhouse booking (members only)

Jules Hall

This year we’ve introduced a new benefit for members: Provided you’ve paid your annual membership fees you’re entitled to book the clubhouse for a BBQ on a Friday or Saturday afternoon up til 8pm (subject to availability).

Please contact the Secretary to make your booking. Premium dates (Christmas Day, New Year's etc) will be auctioned separately to raise funds for the club.

If you need to renew your membership please click here.

Adventure Sailing

Jules Hall

This season we are trialling a new addition to our Sunday morning program: Adventure Sailing.

Recognising that there are plenty of kids who enjoy sailing but who aren’t ready or are not interested in joining the Race Fleet, we are introducing an Adventure Sailing program on Sunday mornings. To participate kids needs to have completed Start Sailing 1 & 2 or equivalent. The sessions will last approximately two hours. They can use their own boat or a club PJ (subject to availability). The group will be overseen by a coach, but the focus will be on having fun versus completing AS qualifications.

Reflecting the lighter touch coaching this course will be charged at $295 per term.

Holiday Camps Filing Fast

Jules Hall

It seems that everyone’s ready to get out on the harbour! The October Holiday Camps are filling very nicely, definitely helped by recent coverage on Ella’s List. If you are thinking about registering your kids we encourage you to get their names down early to avoid disappointment.

Dates

28th Sep - 2 Oct 2020 (choose 5,4 or 3 day camp)

6th Oct - 9th Oct 2020 (choose 4 or 3 day camp)

Full details and link to booking here.

October Holiday Camps

Jules Hall

With the spring holidays a few weeks away, we’ve opened up bookings for our October holiday camps.

The holiday camps are a great way for new families and kids to try sailing before they commit to joining our Sunday morning program in Term 4. Or for kids in the Sailing School to hone their skills - and have a lot of fun - whilst Mum and Dad are busy working (potentially from home these days). Running from 8.30am - 4pm they are a full day and they are of course drop and go, unlike the Sunday morning program.

Full details and link to booking available here. Please share with friends who may be interested - this is an important pathway to attract new sailors to our club.

With a few more senior kids in the club this year, we have the option to put on an advanced program with a dedicated coach if we have enough takers. If this is of interest please email Jules Hall.

Flying 11 Training - Sat 5th September

Jules Hall

Simon Nearn is organising a Flying 11 training day this Saturday. Rigging at 11.45am for 1pm splash.

We have four new teams joining the fleet this year. And we still have a couple of boats available if others want to join in. If you’re interested please email Simon Nearn or call on 0405 585 314.

Sabot Association - Winter Training 25 - 26 July

Jules Hall

The NSW Sabot Association is holding a winter training camp at Drummoyne Sailing Club over the weekend o25-26 July. Event details and registration is available here.

VA12SC’s head coach, Adele Phillips, will be one of the coaches.

The NSW Sabot Association AGM will be held at 10am at DSC on Sunday 26th July and all association members are encouraged to attend.

Free Australian Sailing Courses

Jules Hall

As a club we have a heavy reliance on our (parent!) volunteers. Whilst some of our volunteers have lots of sailing and boating experience, others have less experience. But fear not, Australian Sailing is coming to our rescue…

Australian Sailing are running their Club Race Officer and Club Equipment Auditor courses as online seminars moving forwards. The seminars are being run free of charge to assist clubs during these challenging times.

Club Race Officer Course

This course is aimed at people who have a keen interest in sailing and want to participate in another facet of the sport. Those who may be interested in becoming a Race Officer include parents who may have limited experience with sailing and want to contribute to the sport, volunteers at yacht clubs and sailors who no longer actively participate in the sport. This seminar is run online over 3 hours.

A schedule of the courses has been set from today through to June 2021 with courses running at a minimum of once a month, with additional courses over the next few weeks already scheduled.

Further details and seminar dates:  www.sailing.org.au/clubraceofficer

 Club Equipment Auditor Courses

This course is for anyone interested in assisting clubs with providing a safety service for sailing racing. Those who may be interested in becoming a Club Equipment Auditor include club and local volunteers, current and former club sailors who no longer actively participate in the sport. The Club Equipment Auditor seminar is aimed at educating Australian Sailing members to assess Category 3-7 racing vessels and their compliance to the Special regulations. These courses are running once per month over May, June, July, then quarterly year round.

Further details and seminar dates:  www.sailing.org.au/equipmentauditor

Other Australian Sailing Courses

The schedule for all other courses has been drafted until June 2021, and all of these can be found online at https://www.sailing.org.au/australian-sailing-courses/

Easter Holiday Camps 2020

Jules Hall

Remarkably it’s only 5 weeks until the Easter school holidays. How does time travel so fast?!

We’ve got two weeks of camps scheduled this Easter:

  • Tuesday 14th April - Friday 17th April

  • Monday 20th April - Friday 24th April

It’s really helpful to get early notice of who will be attending - then we have time to get the right number of instructors lined up. You can book here. More details on holiday camps available here.

With a bigger race fleet this season we could put on a specialist camp for those kids. If you think that could be interesting, please send an email to sailingschool@va12sc.org.au. With an initial show of hands we can work if it’s worth putting on.

Back to normal this Sunday!

Jules Hall

Not surprisingly there wasn’t much sailing at VA12SC last Sunday, just one dramatic rescue of a tender that had broken it’s moorings!

After last weekend’s wild weather BOM is forecasting a far more manageable 8-10 knot breeze for this weekend.

Sailing School will be in action from 8.30am.

For the race fleet it’s heat 7 of the Club Championships with Sabots in the morning, Flying 11s and Cherubs in the afternoon.

Most importantly, the Canteen will be back to normal operations!

Look forward to seeing you all on Sunday.

Sailing this Sunday

Jules Hall

We have a big weekend of regattas this weekend. The Sabot race fleet are up in Gosford at round 2 of the NSW State Titles and the Cherub NSW State Titles are running at Drummoyne SC.

Whilst that means a lot of families will be away the club will be hosting sailing as usual.

Sailing School activities kick off at the usual times.

Kutti Cup racing will be held for any boats not traveling to regattas.

Please note that as Fiona and Sasha are away at the state titles the canteen service will be limited. Tanya Hall and Kirstie Amland are kindly doing the breakfast BBQ. Payment this week will be cash only. No other canteen service will be available.

Next week everything will be back to normal operations.

Good luck to the regatta fleet. We look forward to seeing everyone else at the club on Sunday.

Term 1 sailing kicks off this Sunday!

Jules Hall

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone back at the club this Sunday for the start of Term 1 sailing!

This week is Heat 4 of the Club Championships.

A reminder of timings:

9.30am - briefing for race fleet and Sailing School Session # 2 (Better Sailing, Start Racing & Better Racing)
