They have been a strong component of the club ever since and an ideal boat on which to begin sailing. Sabots are a single sail boat for children aged 7-16. Up to 12 years, boats are sailed '2-up' - with a skipper and crew. After that time sailors may compete in 'one-up' competitions. The Sabot is a Cat rigged pram dinghy, chine built and 2.4m in length. Sabots are raced at the Club on Sunday mornings during the season. Sailors can attend training days and weekends offered by the Sabot Association. These are often held at the beginning of the season and provide experienced trainers, giving sailors an opportunity to extend their skills. State and National regattas are annual events and are held in a variety of locations giving sailors experience in racing. The class is now a Pittwater Junior and is very similar to the Sabot aside from the open transom to allow a free water flow and a stayless mast. The "PJ" is a great training boat, and it now being utilised as a trainer for new sailors to the club. The club now owns 5 brand new PJ's especially for training and practice. Flying Elevens: Designed in the early 1960's, it is a perfect follow-on boat for teenagers after Sabots and MJs. F11s are 3.42m in length with a curved stem and wide transom. The three-sail boats are two handed, usually sailed by children over 12 years old. The F11 association holds regattas and training weekends that are very well attended with approximately 90-100 boats at the start lines. They are used throughout Australia as a training and team racing boat for schools, the Puffin Pacer is ideal for students wishing to experience more sophisticated sailing. The Pacer has a main and jib, and is large enough to be sailed by two adults or ideally as a trainer 1 adult and three or more children. It is noted as a stable craft which displays a great deal of stability in strong winds and choppy seas. | ||||||||
