Cherubs
High Performance Skiff Sailing for Sailors From 16 yrs to 60+
After a 30 year absence, 12 footers are back at VA12SC!
The Cherub is a high performance 12 foot skiff and is part of the extreme sailing family including 16 footers, 18 footers and beyond.
At VA12SC, the Cherub is the next step for our junior sailors after the electric Flying 11 although they are still a blast for sailors 60+ years old!
We welcome thrill seekers from near and far.
Cherubs are an exhilarating boat to sail – fast and responsive upwind and with lightning acceleration downwind.
The modern Cherub has a 12 foot carbon fibre hull, weights in for racing from a minimum of only 52 kgs and has a huge spinnaker. It is set up for 2 sailors together weighing ideally between 120kgs – 130kgs with the crew on a trapeze. There are no age limits and various combinations of 16 to 60+ year old men and women crew together in thriving fleets. Indeed even Mums and Dads are seen crewing for their kids – wide-eyed, adrenaline pumping!
Cherubs are fast and competitive and, just as importantly, the class has a strong sailing community – sociable and supportive. The class has seen a resurgence in recent years with skillful and sociable racing an attraction to school-leaving sailors wanting competition and fun. It is also ideal for those who want a home-club base with inter-club options.
